Interpretation
A study for a larger painting also by Willard Leroy Metcalf entitled Giverny (1887, University of Kentucky, Lexington), The River Epte shows the waterway that runs near the village of Giverny, in Normandy, France. The view centers on open ground near the banks of the tree-lined river, which is reduced to a small area of reflecting water at the lower left corner of the composition. Beyond the trees, near the high horizon, a few of Giverny’s typical stone, red-roofed houses are glimpsed on the opposite shore. The dark mass in the right distance in this work appears as either a footbridge or a sluice crossing the water in the larger, more finished painting Giverny. Probably a sketch made on site, The River Epte is freely painted in thin washes, but the composition is carefully organized with a conscious interest in asymmetrical arrangement of forms and contrasts of light and dark.

In the late 1880s, Metcalf spent several summers in Giverny, which would soon become a popular international artists' colony. Artists were attracted there in part by the presence of French painter Claude Monet (1840–1926), a leading practitioner of impressionism, the painting of contemporary subjects in terms of reflected light rendered in broken brushstrokes and pure color. Few members of Giverny’s international community fully embraced Monet’s radical impressionism, but under his influence they loosened their brushwork, focused on natural light effects, and practiced plein-air, or outdoor, painting as they explored the modest beauties of the surrounding landscape, particularly its quiet waterways. In 1887, the year he painted this work, Metcalf portrayed the Epte River in The Lily Pond, (TF 1993.5) also in the Terra Foundation’s collection.
