Interpretation
Maurice Prendergast's monotype Lady in Pink (CR 1741) seemingly pictures the same red-haired model seen in another monotype, The Opera Cloak (TF 1992.97, CR 1693).  This print's delicate surface effects harmonize with the pink and red tones of the woman's hair, dress, and umbrella, relieved by the blue of her hat, which is decorated with white flowers.  The swirling movement of her skirt animates the image. Prendergast used light touches of graphite to suggest the woman's facial features.  On a card affixed to the back of the print, he inscribed the work's title, along with his signature.

The pale tones of Lady in Pink are explained by its status as the cognate, or second impression, made from the painted matrix that first yielded At Crescent Beach (Wolff Collection, CR 1740).  The artist's reversed monogram, in the lower left corner, is only faintly visible in this impression.  Lady in Pink was given by the artist's brother, Charles Prendergast, and his wife to Connecticut friends some time before 1948.  It is possible that the monotype's frame was hand carved by Charles as part of the gift.
