James Carroll Beckwith
Date: c. 1885
Credit Line: Terra Foundation for American Art, Daniel J. Terra Collection
Object number: 1987.14
Text Entries: Giverny: visited 1891 A native of Chicago, James Carroll Beckwith made several summer trips to Europe, often traveling through the French countryside where he experimented with painting en plein air. Ostensibly executed during one of his travels to France, this landscape stands apart in Beckwith's oeuvre, most often known for figurative works. Inscribed at the lower right, "For my friend/J.A. Hawkins/Carroll Beckwith," the small work could have served as a souvenir of a shared excursion that predated his month-long stay in Giverny.
