Interpretation
Montmartre: July 14 was inspired by the festivities in Paris on the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the fall of the Bastille prison, an event that precipitated the French Revolution. Childe Hassam visited the modest quarter of Paris and recorded the brilliant color of the echoing French flags massed along the street with lush hills framing the scene on the right. Montmartre was soon to become famous as an artists’ haven, but in the 1880s it was still a working-class enclave; Hassam shows the scene populated by farm women in white aprons and with baskets on their arms. This small work demonstrates the artist’s abiding fascination with urban street life, but also reveals an uncharacteristic preoccupation with formal, asymmetric arrangement of flat areas of color. Montmartre: July 14 anticipates by a quarter of a century Hassam’s many paintings of city streets overhung with patriotic banners, which are among the artist’s most celebrated works.
