InterpretationIn Maurice Prendergast's monotype Watching the Races (CR 1752) the deeply receding space is compressed in the composition's tipped-up perspective, terminating in a high horizon. The image layers a cluster of girls in pale dresses, adults dressed in dark clothing, and an expanse of water on which sailboats race. On the horizon, a brown strip of land divides water and sky. Balancing the composition's horizontal emphasis is a vertical pole. Leaning against it is a man in brown, who appears to be the only person actually watching the race.
As evidenced by its muted tones, Watching the Races is a cognate, or second impression, made from the matrix that first yielded Girls on Esplanade (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, CR 1751). The artist framed the image with a brown border, inscribing his monogram along the bottom. He printed this monotype on Japanese paper embedded with flecks of mica that give it a subtle shimmer.
The chaotic overlapping of the group of girls in the extreme foreground of Watching the Races suggests a later date within the body of Prendergast's monotypes. Establishing a clear chronology for the stylistic evolution of the artist's work in monotype is notoriously difficult. This is a scene that does not easily fit into a particular series of monotypes, with "Children at Play" offering the best fit by theme.
