Interpretation
In Everett Shinn’s intimate yet vivid Theater Scene, two actresses with parasols, lit from below by unseen footlights, pose near the edge of a theater stage, with a spectral male figure in the shadows behind them. These figures are pictured from the viewpoint of a member of the audience that fills the foreground and is separated from the elevated stage by the orchestra. A bass fiddle player, standing with his back to the viewer, is silhouetted against the bright red of one actress’s evening dress; to his right, across several stands bearing sheet music, the mustachioed conductor looks up toward the stage. His pointed baton extends toward the red-dressed figure on stage, whose outstretched arm seems to take up his gesture. The subject of the onstage action is undefined, but the woman’s flamboyant dress and dramatic gesture suggest a scripted opposition to the white-clad figure, whose right arm cradles a bundle like a swaddled infant. On the right, the architecture of the theater—the gathered red curtain, the gold edge of the proscenium, and the red wall separating the stage from the house, where a woman leans forward over the edge of the balcony wall with its elaborate gold and red decoration—underscores the artificiality of the actors’ gestures and personae.

Shinn’s passion for the stage dominated his art and his life. He made his first depictions of music halls and concert-cafés during a visit to Europe in 1900, and soon his art was almost exclusively devoted to the world of the theater. The immediacy and realism of Theater Scene—effected through rough, sketchy brushwork and casual, off-center compositional framing—suggest that Shinn painted it on-site in the theater. In fact, his sketches and memories of his visits to London and Paris theaters often served as the basis for paintings that capture the actuality of the theater-going experience.

Shinn also learned from the theater images of artistic contemporaries who shared his fascination with the world of performers. The distorting effects of theatrical uplighting and the use of the audience’s perspective to draw attention to themes of objectification and appearance were common devices among artists exploring modernity in their images. Shinn shared his interest in theaters, vaudeville halls, and circuses with fellow members of the group of social realist artists known as The Eight, such as William Glackens, whose music hall illustration entitled A Headache in Every Glass (TF 1992.170) is also in the Terra Foundation’s collection. For these artists, such sites of popular entertainment embodied the heady mixture of ebullience and pathos that characterized modern urban experience.
