Interpretation
Many of Erastus Salisbury Field’s commissions involved painting portraits of several members of a single family. In 1838 and 1839, at the height of his career as a portrait painter, Field painted the Gallond family of Petersham, Massachusetts. His portrait of Louisa Gallond (1838; Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, Vermont) is virtually identical in pose and background to the Terra Foundation’s portrait, which has been identified as a likeness of Louisa’s sister Clarissa. Louisa and Clarissa were married to brothers—Louisa to Nathaniel Cook and Clarissa to William. The Cooks were merchants who owned a schooner that sailed along the Hudson River. While the similarities in these portraits may have been intended to reflect these double family ties, Field differentiated his sitters through details of their coiffure, dress, and the pose of their hands.

Field observed conventions of fashionable portraiture by including pictorial elements intended to help “define” the sitter. In a nod to European convention, a red drape is drawn back to reveal a marble column and parapet framing a landscape in the background. Although women were typically portrayed alongside elements of nature, often emblematic of fecundity, virtue, and piety, here Field presented the sitter with a vista of a fantasy port city in the background. This prosperous community, composed of red brick commercial structures interspersed with churches, is situated on a body of water plied by numerous ships. The sitter’s bright-eyed expression suggests that she is in firm command of the domain depicted, and is consistent with the possibility that, as the background suggests, she was active in business affairs. She grasps what appears to be a sheaf of loose paper, perhaps business correspondence, another possible indication of her station and importance.

Field’s repertoire of sharply delineated forms and use of pattern result in decorative compositions that carry symbolic meaning. His appealing, emblematic portraits were intended as a tribute to the status and character of New England’s nineteenth-century provincial aristocracy.
