InterpretationIn Morning Haze, Winter, Concarneau, the fishing village on the Brittany coast of France appears bleached by the effect of bright sunlight diffused through morning mist. Distant buildings are reduced to simple planes of muted pastels, and the medieval stone church of Notre Dame de Bon Secours overlooking the calm water of the Port de la Croix is flattened to a dull lavender silhouette, its distinctive spire-topped shape echoed by the tall crucifixes bounding it on both sides. The scene is deserted except for a black-clad woman, a basket on her arm, walking toward the viewer over the pale ground.
This small painting is among the earliest known works created in Concarneau by Charles Henry Fromuth, who had settled in the village two years before he painted it. Originally drawn there for its cheap accommodations, he remained for the rest of his life, devoting his paintings and drawings in charcoal and pastel to depicting Concarneau's active harbor with its boats, shimmering waters, and shifting light. European and American artists flocked to Concarneau in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, attracted in part by the silvery gray light of later winter and early spring. Fromuth was among many artists who followed the example of French painter Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848–1884) in painting the church and in emphasizing a harmonious uniformity of tone. In the wake of such early works as Morning Haze, Winter, Concarneau, however, Fromuth departed from this mode and began to create focused images of boats and the harbor using the distinct, slashing strokes of strong color characteristic of the new mode known as impressionism.
